What's Proofreading?
People who aren't familiar with the publishing world often use the word "proofreading" to mean almost any kind of editing to improve a document. That's fine—"proofreading" is a more commonly heard word than "copyediting" or "line editing," for example.
Technically, proofreading is the last quality check before publication. It's performed after developmental editing, line editing, and copyediting.
The proofreader's eyes are the last ones on the document.
The proofreader's job is to catch and correct any remaining errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and formatting.
