What's Copyediting?

Copyediting (sometimes spelled copy editing) isn't the same thing as developmental editing (also called substantive editing), which is "big picture" editing done before the writing of a manuscript is completed—or, sometimes, even begun. I don't offer developmental editing.

Copyediting also isn't the same thing as line editing or proofreading, which I do offer.

Line editing is stylistic; copyediting is technical. Here's what I'll aim for as your copyeditor:
  • no spelling errors
  • perfect grammar
  • correct use of punctuation
  • subject–verb agreement
  • correct and consistent capitalization
  • consistent style and formatting

What else can I do?
  • check facts
  • note when permissions may be needed to publish copyrighted material
  • cross-check references, art, figures, tables, equations, and other features with mentions of them in the text
  • verify links
  • create tables of contents
  • create bibliographies
